You can screw up plenty in your superhero movie… but not the CGI.

I have a bit of curiosity about the art of CGI (see previous posts here, here, and here) and so, naturally, any post on the same showing up on my Twitter feed is an automatic click for me. When you decide to bring in CGI to your project, you should…

Got ourselves a good SCOTUS detective mystery!

As predicted, a) Roe v Wade is history and b) all the Very Serious People on Twitter are treating Alito’s leaked decision like a bolt from the blue, and not something preordained the minute RBG shuffled off this mortal coil. It is not an exaggeration to say that all of…

On another Natco foundational text

I’ve mentioned Josh Hammer as one of the most prominent fascist thought leaders. I’ve been remiss in not linking to his own essay on the matter. https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/the-only-path-forward-is-national-conservatism/ While perhaps not as concise as Glenn Ellmers’ essay on the subject, Hammer does bring to light certain elements of American fascism —…

Eulogy for my brother

My bro passed away tonight. It was not sudden or unexpected. But it was not any less devastating. When we were teenagers, he was obsessed with ’60s music. I’m not entirely sure why, but he seemed to identify with Paul, with Mick, and above all, with Jim Morrison. He would play mix tapes or CDs for me when I knew nothing about these guys. I would absolutely not have learned much about the old classics if it weren’t for him. And of course, his band of high school friends called themselves the Fab Four.

Climate and the destiny of the species, part 2

Creationists come up with many arguments in support of their religious beliefs, most silly, but a few quite clever. For example of the latter: How come there are so few transitional fossils — aka missing links — in the evolutionary record? …

You guys could win with literally anyone but Trump. *Anyone* else.

To put it mildly, people writing the obituaries of the Republican Party after the horrors of 1/6 were greatly mistaken. For as much as most voters hate the last president, they sure don’t care for the Democrats or Joe Biden either. Not after debacles like the helicopters-at-Saigon Afghan pullout or…

We all have a cancel culture.

The only debate is, who gets to decide who gets to be cancelled? Blindingly obvious, maybe; yet the cancel-culture takes keep pouring forth on the daily from our illustrious thought (and sports) leaders. When they go on about this a topic that regularly pits progressive versus the center-left— What speech…

Medium: Steal This Feature! (also, bonus Sopranos-ending dithering)

While reading a 2019 piece discussing the ending of the Sopranos, I came across this simple yet remarkable feature. Hovering over the hyperlink in blue made the footnote to the left appear in what had been empty white space — no clicking needed! This is such a more elegant tool…

Celebrity is tediously featureless. Real life is infinitely fascinating.

Time for a personal rant! Reddit is an increasingly archaic, 00’s era social media platform that has stubbornly refused most incentives to modernize over the years, unlike other peer products of the aughts like Facebook and Twitter. Operating on slow, buggy hardware that most likely closely resembles its original server…

On being a prude.

I realize the idea of sexual modesty might sound a bit quaint these days. Some in the culture believe sex should be as casual as shaking hands. And some self-proclaimed conservatives behave as if they do, even if hypocritically giving lip service to the ideal of waiting until marriage. But…
